What is the Risograph?

Risograph printing was born in 1980s Japan — designed originally to churn out high volumes of copies cheaply and efficiently. But somewhere along the way, illustrators and artists discovered it, and fell completely in love.

A Risograph is a digital duplicator: a large, slightly eccentric machine that prints each colour individually on its own roller, building up layers with every pass. The result is something that feels less like printing and more like printmaking — rich, tactile, and full of happy accidents.

The colour palette is limited to up to four inks, but within that constraint comes a kind of freedom. Alongside standard colours, Riso offers unusual, almost otherworldly options — neons that glow, metallics that shimmer. Colours layer and overlap to create unexpected new tones that you simply can't plan for on a screen.

Because each pass through the machine is printed separately, tiny shifts in alignment are part of the process. No two Riso prints are ever exactly the same.

Please note:

Risograph uses soy-based, non-toxic inks and runs on low energy with minimal waste — it's one of the most environmentally kind ways to print. The inks are also light-sensitive, which means Riso prints should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading or discolouration over time. To protect your print, frame it behind UV-protective glass or Plexiglas.
